Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory process of the plantar fascia, a thick fibrous band of tissue originating on the bottom surface of the heel bone and extending along the sole of the foot towards the five toes. This occurs in 10% of the population over a lifetime. It is commonly associated with long periods of weight bearing work or high body mass index. The pain is usually felt on the underside of the heel and is often most intense with the first steps of the day.
Those suffering from this condition may also experience swelling of the tendons in and around the ankle, or of the achilles tendon at the back of the foot, making both standing and walking severely painful. This may result in changes to the dynamics of how you walk, and untreated may lead to additional problems not only with your feet, but also with your knees and hips.
Laser Therapy Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis and Foot Pain:
BioFlex Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) is the treatment of choice for those suffering from plantar fasciitis. Treatment pads can be positioned to cover the base of the foot as well as the ankle, and the light energy is absorbed deeply by the tissues, tendons and nerves to promote healing and relieve pain. This condition, if left untreated, may never heal because of the constant re-injury of these tissues every time you walk. Laser therapy, combined with taping of the foot and ankle for extra support, has been effective in healing plantar fasciitis even for health care practitioners who are on their feet continuously for 10 to 12 hour shifts.
Once your condition has been resolved, Dr. Wayne can take a Footmaxx scan, which measures the dynamics of how your feet are working to carry you while walking. This scan can determine if custom orthotics (insoles) may be helpful to ensure that this condition does not return.
